In this week’s portion, Noah, the Torah records that God destroyed the world because it is filled with Hamas (ruthless violence). (Yes, I kid you not, the Hebrew word that the Torah used for ruthless violence 3,500 years ago is Hamas, I did not make that up!). Then, after annihilating all life except for those remaining on the Ark, God makes a covenant that He will never destroy the Earth again (at least not by flooding) and created the Rainbow as a reminder to mankind to never devolve into such a violent state again, or else face serious consequences.

My problem is this - Out of all the things in the Universe, why did God choose the awe-inspiring, jaw-droppingly beautiful Rainbow as the sign to warn us rather than creating something more threatening and ominous? Perhaps it was to teach us the following lesson… Seeing the Rainbow after a storm reminds us that in our darkest hour, no matter how bleak the outlook, even if we are knee deep in devastation and calamity, that we must have faith that the tragic situation will eventually end and ultimately be resolved for the good. We may not be able to fathom how, when, or where it may happen, and we may not even live to see it occur in our lifetimes, but IT WILL COME!

And that is the symbolism of the colorful and uplifting Rainbow - It is God’s guarantee to mankind that somehow, someway He WILL make things work out for the best .. (like the hostages!) and you can count on Him to make it happen!
